BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE : A RISING TREND

Business Intelligence (BI) refers to the means and methods employed by a company to collect, model and render tangible or intangible data to assist the ones who make decisions within a firm. It gives them an overview of the activity of the firm.

With a growth exceeding 10% in 2009, Business Intelligence is well above sales of the software market, which has declined by 8% during the same year. Its main problem is not only to gather information but also to make available the appropriate form at the right time for the right person so that it can use its full value.

Three major trends are emerging regarding Business Intelligence.

First, a key issue is to create graphical, dynamic and readable user interfaces for untrained users of BI tools. The Cigref explained in its report that Business Intelligence is far behind in the applications and interfaces 2.0.

Then, there is a growing interest in non-technical users of BI in business for mobile decision. Oracle was the first to suggest porting its solution Business Indicators on the Iphone. It was followed by other porting of solutions from vendors such as Microstrategy or QlikTech. For Anthony Deighton, QlikTech product manager "this software is only the first of many…"!

Finally, it appears that more and more service centers will be internalized or externalized by a service provider. They will be dedicated to business intelligence and related to information system in the manner of a data center. The purpose of such a process will be to organize and secure needs in the appropriate manner while streamlining costs.

In addition, the open source market has grown steadily and now tends to offer the BI in free access. Many professionals have realized the importance of open source softwares with the software for the infrastructure, and with portal solutions and web content management. The next step would be ... BI!
